3 R’s Approach to Green Remodeling

Redeploy building materials for green remodeling

Redeploy

carpet, appliances cabinets, shelving, and any other re-usable items that can go to Habitat to Humanity, local charities or a Thrift Store

Reinvent items that would be thrown away for green remodeling

Reinvent

and find new uses for items that otherwise would be headed to the landfill. Screws taken from an old cabinet may be used to hang a shelf. A box is kept on sight for these items. Another example is to use old carpet to line vegetable gardens to keep down weeds.

Recycling building materials for green remodeling

Recycle

not only basics such as plastic, paper and metal generated in a remodel, but the heavy duty items including carpet, glass, mirrors, heating and cooling units, etc.

For example in the “whole house remodel” we were able to Redeploy items, Reinvent uses for others and if that failed, we sent it to be Recycled. We avoided the landfill whenever possible.
